Feeling the heat
Learning about life in a land of dust and salt
Chile
Infinity in the palm of your hand
January 26, 2013 by Cassidy Parker in Chile

A jolt in the road, roused from a sleep so deep I feel drugged, I peek one eye out from the curtains of the bus carrying me into northern Chile. The thought occurs to me for the first time. It strikes again several hours later when, travelling by daylight on a second bus, I slowly clock up over 17 hours of travel.

Where am I going?

Now, after just three days in this place, a place magnificent in its desolation, I find it difficult to believe that this terrain does not coat the earth. How could it cease, how could it possibly change, sprout a town, a city, a forest? An ocean is inconceivable. The Atacama Desert has become my world, and how could it not, when the word endless fails to describe it?

My first morning in the strange, sleepy village of San Pedro de Atacama holds a wonderful surprise: a friend. Australian and a policewoman, her positive energy, sense of spontaneity and adventure, and companionship has breathed new life into my already happy travels. My mother’s voice echoes in my ears: life is for sharing, and though I have developed a preference for travelling alone, it is only because it allows me to interrupt my times of solitude with unexpected and welcome characters.

I am grateful for Belinda’s company as we explore this otherworldly landscape. I think I need it. I need someone to hear me say, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this before,’ or, better yet, to hear me say nothing at all – for all the words I’ve learnt stall in my mouth when I try to describe this particular patch of planet.

The novelty of this place does not end at its scenery and the feelings of vulnerability and joy it brings out in me. For the first time, I swim in a lake with a 40% concentration of salt. The sensation of not being able to keep your body underwater is counterintuitive; the salt that is deposited all over your body, but especially on your hands and lips, uncomfortable and dehydrating in the extreme. The heat and salt have meant that I have more than lost my seaside curls, and my hair lies limp and lifeless.

But these aesthetic trivialities are forgotten before the Atacama’s salt flats, which overwhelm and humble. The Salar de Atacama are the second largest in the world. Tomorrow I begin a four-day journey to visit the largest: the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, something that has long been on my ‘to-experience’ list.

It is worth mentioning that I have made another friend during my time here. She doesn’t say much, but she’s very friendly.

A few final snaps from @wonderfruitfestival. What A few final snaps from @wonderfruitfestival. What a dream to experience this festival, and especially the @polygon.live stage, in person.

I’m especially grateful for the new friendships I formed and the old friends who came across the world to join us. What a unifying force adventure and music can be!

Thank you so much Polygon, you’ve forever altered live music for me. 🚀
Two nights into Wonderfruit and two nights to go. Two nights into Wonderfruit and two nights to go. It’s been, for lack of almost any words at all, wild.

After hours on the @polygon.live dance floor (and catching a few sets from stage too), I get it. I get what this is all about. I get why they do it, and why it’s so hard to translate the experience into words. Even photographs and videos can’t quite capture what it’s like to feel music move, really *move*, around you. It’s nothing short of magic.

Probably the best part, however, continues to be watching @madgush work. Him, and the rest of the sound team, the lovely @mr.matthill and Davey Williamson, and the visual team from @visualsystem, are pulling off the most monstrous production.

Seeing the delight Matt has in his work, and how flipping good he is at it, is a recipe for love.
The @polygon.live stage @wonderfruitfestival is to The @polygon.live stage @wonderfruitfestival is totally immersive. It’s a 360-hemisphere of sound that moves above you, around you and through you. The lighting is a lightning storm of mastery, and the smoke detectors have been infused with gentle, natural scents.

Immersive. In every way.

I’ve heard so much about what Polygon is doing through Matt, and have even written about it professionally, but nothing is the same as seeing the space come to life — and experiencing its full force — in the flesh.

After several days on site, and with the most out-of-this-world system in place, the festival gates open tomorrow. I’m beyond grateful to be here, and I just love seeing Matt like this. Busy and blissed out.

I’ve also included a few shots of the rest of the festival, which is bubbling up around us.
Hello from Thailand! Matt’s here to do sound a Hello from Thailand!

Matt’s here to do sound at the @polygon.live stage at @wonderfruitfestival, which kicks off in a few days, and I’ll be lending a hand, too.

Our first 36 hours in Bangkok were magical. Steaming hot and smelling of spice and soul and urine.

We made our way to Wat Pho to see the 46m-long, 15m-high Reclining Buddha, caught a tuk-tuk, wandered cat-controlled alleyways, and devoured noodles and mangoes.

We walked and sweated and wallowed in the unmistakable joy of being somewhere new.

When Matt and I started chatting about getting hit When Matt and I started chatting about getting hitched, one of the biggest contributing factors to my decision was the fact that my chances of seeing Florence and the Machine live were a lot higher in the UK than in South Africa.

Last night, my marriage became worthwhile (fortunately, it’s also been a brilliant decision in other ways). Florence live was wild: gothic, epic, electric, magnificent. 20,000 people singing the lyrics to every song, with her holding us captive with her dancing and music and — oh my god — that voice!

She hurt her foot half way through the show and went off stage three times to have it treated. But she finished her performance flawlessly. Today she announced that she’s broken her foot and has had to cancel the rest of her UK tour. Wild. It was wild.

Thank you to @madgush, @sarahemilywild and @kclou_25 for the best reunion, and truly one of the best concerts of my life.
