Action for Accountability
Action for Accountability, or A4A, was a major campaign undertaken by three prominent civil society organisations in South Africa — the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Accountability Lab South Africa and the Public Service Accountability Monitor — to improve public accountability in the country. Through co-funding from the European Union and the Social Justice Initiative, Action for Accountability sought to hold government to account, to educate people on their rights, and to create a growing culture of community-based, citizen-led activism.
At the end of the project’s three-year duration, the A4A team commissioned a mini documentary to demonstrate its work, challenges and impact. I was responsible for researching and writing the film’s voice-over script. This involved working closely with the project’s organisers, participants and beneficiaries, and conducting in-depth research into the background context that necessitated its establishment in the first place. The final product helped to capture the complexities of this sort of work, and the importance of similar projects receiving funding in the future.
